The Sindh High Court (SHC) has suspended the implementation of the Provincial Ombudsperson’s order that directed the removal of Moonis Alvi from his position as Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of K-Electric in connection with a workplace harassment case.
Moonis Alvi, through his legal counsel, approached the Sindh High Court and argued that K-Electric is a federally regulated entity, not under provincial jurisdiction. He contended that such cases should fall under the purview of the Federal Ombudsman, not the provincial ombudsperson. The SHC found merit in this argument and issued a stay order on the implementation of the removal directive until further proceedings.
However, the court maintained that the Rs. 2.5 million penalty imposed in the harassment verdict should be deposited with the court’s Nazar (judicial treasury) as a provisional measure until the case is decided.
The harassment complaint had resulted in a high-profile investigation that drew attention to workplace conduct and corporate accountability. While the Provincial Ombudsperson for Protection against Harassment of Women at the Workplace had earlier directed strict action including Moonis Alvi’s removal the court has now paused the implementation based on jurisdictional concerns.
Moonis Alvi has served as CEO of K-Electric since June 2018. Prior to that, he held senior financial positions within the company and is known for his role in leading KE through various transformation and privatization phases.
This legal development adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing controversy surrounding harassment allegations within one of Pakistan’s most prominent utility company
