Karachi : The University of Karachi has announced a special Syndicate meeting on Monday September 8 2025 to address growing concerns over illegal encroachments on its land The meeting will be chaired by Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Khalid Mahmood Iraqi and will take place at the Vice Chancellor’s Secretariat.
Over the past several months the university has faced mounting pressure from what it describes as “land mafia” groups.
Officials say these groups have been attempting to occupy sections of the institution’s property raising fears for the university’s autonomy security and longterm development.
According to university sources while some measures have already been taken to resist these encroachments the attempts have not stopped.
This is no longer just a legal matter it is a question of survival for the institution one senior member told local reporter
The Syndicate meeting is expected to review the current situation in detail Legal and administrative strategies will be tabled with plans to engage relevant authorities for stronger cooperation Preventive measures to stop any future land grabs will also be discussed
Senior Syndicate members legal advisors and representatives of the local administration have been invited to contribute their expertise The university hopes that a joint approach will lead to a more permanent solution.
In a statement Karachi University reaffirmed its commitment to protecting its land and educational mission. It also appealed to civil society and government bodies to stand united against illegal action
